Figure 1.2: Schematic of relaxed surface planes. d12, d23, etc... denote the interlayer distances of the surface planes. These distances can be different from the bulk spacing (dbulk). Δx1 and Δx2 indicate thhe possible parallel relaxation of the planes, while maintaining the same in-plane periodicity.
