Meeting Location: Weeping Willow Café, Farmingdale, NY
OCEAN TECHNOLOGY: MATERIALS AND MECHANICS AT SEA
Speaker: Herb Herman
Department of Materials Science, SUNY-Stony Brook
The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, SUNY-Stony Brook,
has been involved for over twenty years in studying various aspects
of ocean technology. The principal thrust has been in the area of
engineering education, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The work, which has been supported by a New York State Sea Grant, the
Naval Sea Systems Command, Department of Energy, private foundations,
and industry, has included the following selected programs:
Long-Term Protection of Biomass Farms in the Long Island Sound
DOE, Sea Grant and NAVSEA
Mineral Deposition Growth of Sea-Based Structural Components
Sea Grant
The Construction of a Two-Man Submarine and an Undersea Habitat
SUNYLAB - The Dreyfus Foundation
These systems have been vehicles for engineering education for a
large number of Stony Brook students. A review will be presented of
work involving materials and mechanical systems analysis as applied
to the ocean engineering sector. Current undergraduate Senior Design
students Steve Baader, Luis Bonilla, and Sean Reith will aid in the
presentation.

the power supplies, radiation levels and damage to materials and
components. The presentation will conclude with a review of the
overall system reliability and the plans for a bright future.
December 5, 2001- Companions' Night
Meeting Location: Weeping Willow Cafe, Farmingdale, NY
Topic: SILVERSMITHING
Speaker: Brenda Brummett Kirk
Human Resources Division, Brookhaven National Laboratory
Most metal is as malleable as clay, it just takes a little longer to
work. Using the metalsmithing techniques of forging, annealing,
soldering, repousse, chasing and reticulation, Brenda Brummett Kirk
creates chalices, tea strainers, whistles, coffee and tea services,
and jewelry using sterling silver and gold. She will bring with her
to the meeting a few tools and work at various stages, and discuss the
techniques using in creating these and other art works. Her work has
been shown in art museums throughout the United States, and has been
in traveling shows in Canada, Mexico and Europe.
November 14, 2001- Sustaining Members Night
Location: Weeping Willow Cafe, Farmingdale, NY
Speaker: Laura Henderson Lewis
Materials Science Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory
Subject: From Anarchy to Oligarchy: Structure-Magnetism Connections
in Magnetic NanoSystems
Magnetic materials are indispensable to modern industrial society.
Surprisingly, in our era of advanced technology, the magnetic
materials that support society are still largely produced using
traditional metallurgical concepts. However, recent advances in
the synthesis and characterization of magnetic materials point
toward a major improvement in the performance of these materials.
Investigating magnetic materials at the atomic level, researchers
are discovering that by manipulating the formation of materials at
the nanometer level they can produce permanent magnets that are 3
to 4 times stronger than the best existing permanent magnets. This
opens the way for scientists to design functional devices
comprised of diverse magnetic materials with nanometer dimensions
that act in concert to exhibit new, exciting and totally unexplored
properties. These developments will be accompanied by reductions in the size, weight
and energy consumption of machines and devices incorporating these
new magnetic materials, resulting in savings of energy and,
by extension, greenhouse gas production.
October 17, 2001- Advertisers' Night
Meeting Location: Weeping Willow Café, Farmingdale, NY
Networking Event: Our first technical meeting for the Chapter Year
2001-2002 and a first time ever event for the Chapter.
This is our way of thanking the advertisers for the support
they provide, which helps to offset the costs of putting together
and distributing the Metallagram. Please come along to the Weeping
Willow to meet them in person. The general economy is not at its
strongest at this point in time and they would welcome the chance to
discuss present and future needs. The event will be of an informal
nature (this is not a mini trade show, let alone a full-blown
exposition!) so you can take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere to
establish some focused information and useful future contacts. At the
time of writing, confirmations of attendance have been received from
Buehler, Long Island Testing Labs., Struers, and Unitron. So come out
and join us, renew old acquaintances and meet new ones.
September 30, 2001
Location: Bidwell Vineyards, Cutchogue, NY
Event: Wine Tasting/ Buffet Dinner/ Facility Tour
The first event of the 2001-2002 Chapter year will be held on S
unday, September 30, 2001, on the North Fork of Long Island. In a
change from the past, this year we will meet at the Bidwell
Vineyards, situated on Rt. 48 in Cutchogue, at 1:30 pm. After
the tour and sampling their wares, there will be a break to let
you check up on other attractions in the area (fruit and vegetable
stands, antique stores, etc.). We will reconvene at 4.30 pm at the
Corey Creek Vineyards (about 18 miles east of Riverhead on Rt. 25,
on the right (south) side, in Southold) for a private wine tasting
hosted by Bedell Cellars of Cutchogue (their own facility is under
renovation). In addition to the tasting, we have arranged for a
buffet dinner, after which we will raffle off a few bottles of the
local products. Come out and join us, renew old acquaintances and
meet new ones. We hope to enjoy our usual good fortune with the
weather but, just in case, there are arrangements to move the dinner
indoors if necessary.
